Foundation Hindu Media (OHM)
About OHM
The foundation OHM has a particular place within the Dutch broadcasting establishments. It originates from the strongly differentiated and diverse multicultural Hindu communities, which makes up about 200,000 persons in The Netherlands. It is a community whose interest in spirituality is growing continuously. OHM makes television and radio programmes for Hindus and for the general public.
Mission statement
On the 10th of February 1993 OHM received her broadcasting permission. In the statute of the foundation, the management has incorporated the following objectives:
- To maintain the transmission of the radio and Television programmes based on spiritual awakening and entertainment in line with the article 39f of the Media Law pertaining to the air-time. The transmission will be aimed at all the categories of listeners and viewers in order to make Hinduism known to them and win their trust. The broadcasting of the programs aims also to contribute towards the integration of the Hindu culture in to the Dutch society and thereby help towards forming a stable community.
- To promote the cooperation and dialogue between several religious groups.
OHM brings forth to the audience, varieties of programmes which are inspired by the Hindu philosophy and traditional writings, such as the Veda's, the Upanishads, Brahman, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita.
The main issue is respect for all living entities. In the action (Karma) of the human being and the moral behaviour (Dharma) with respect to others, the goal is liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Respect to all living beings becomes apparent in the idealistic ideas of being tolerant, peace-loving and the urge for the knowledge on non-violence (Ahimsa).
The Netherlands offers home to a variety of communities. When living within the multicultural society lacks reciprocal interaction, and is based on the acceptance of being different from each other, such a society may attain poor developments and serve as an avenue for extreme expression. The OHM puts itself into the reinforcement for the basis of the multicultural society by offering many communication possibilities between Hindus and other faith groups.
OHM is also active on the Internet. Except with this corporate Internet site (www.ohmnet.nl), OHM has also a site for the youth: Chatney.nl (www.chatney.nl) and an Internet site for those interested in spirituality : www.lotusvijver.nl .
